Granted, I did start The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho this morning and am halfway through.

Our field trip today was to the Globe, which was pretty interesting to see. I think I might go see King Lear on the season's opening night.

If anyone wants to get me a housewarming present for my new place in Columbia, I am currently obsessed with Guitar Hero. I'll need a Wii as well. Juuust kidding, I'll get it myself :)

So, my journalism project. It's due on Monday, I made my project proposal well over 3 weeks ago, but somehow I'm just starting. I've set up a blog and am going to basically make a guide to the celebrity world of London. Apparently that's journalism? I talked to my professor yesterday and she said "well, you don't want it to just be writing, like make it into a website."

Um...okay...I don't know how to do that and don't think I'm going to be able to learn by Monday night, but great.

For now, I think I'm going to just stick to the blog idea, turn that in, and then for my class presentation maybe make a PowerPoint presentation so it's "not all writing."

I'm currently wishing that it was April 27 and a) Mom was here b) I was on a beach somewhere or c) I was in St. Louis. If you see a lamp with a genie in it, send it to London!!

Oh, and my ear hurts? I'm not sure what that means but it can't be good.

Now, back to The Alchemist.

xx
abbeakshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02957803560688708504noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5632395280076451127.post-90575596997506791332008-04-04T22:53:00.002+01:002008-04-04T23:06:04.071+01:00How to look good nakedToday, MSN's Life & Style editor Nicole O'Neil and I went to the filming of the season finale of Gok Wan's How To Look Good Naked. We trekked about an hour outside London to be guests at the event.

The purpose of How To Look Good Naked is to help women realize their beauty through confidence etc. It totally belongs on the WE channel. Gok Wan is the fabulously gay oriental man who hosts the show. Like, on the runway he was wearing a rose pink suit, navy patent shoes, and made out with a guy.

There were five normal-human-being-sized models strutting their stuff on the catwalk, basically to pump up Jenny, the poor woman who felt her body didn't deserve to be looked at by anyone. P.S. She's rail thin. You could count her vertebrae.

It was hilarious when they all modeled lingerie, and of course Jenny had to as well. She came out in a little red number and then stripped naked in front of the cameras and audience. She only showed us her bum.

Anyway, the show premieres in May on Channel 4 in London and Nic and I will be in the episode! Once I get the link for the online stream of the show, I'll put it up.beakshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02957803560688708504noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5632395280076451127.post-77678116893110171952008-04-02T21:24:00.011+01:002008-04-03T22:15:04.963+01:00I Love PenguinsUpdate: I had to change the title because Penguin Love is out of commission.

Today after our trip to the V&A, I decided to stop in the Natural History Museum since it wouldn't be overridden with kids. The museum is actually one of my most vivid memories of London - I remember being at the gift shop picking out a rainbow-striped eraser. Sweet life, I know. I actually checked to see if they still had one...I saw a lot of amazing stuff (I'm going to go back with my camera for the Dinosaur exhibit) but the highlight was the Shell Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2007 exhibit. I've been wanting to see it since I got here. First time here (no I'm not dirty, it's just that I did it all in St. Louis and since then have been taking it to my aunt's house). Anyway, so, laundromats are useless. Let me paint you a picture.

I picked up kebabs from my Indian place, and then went to the laundromat next door. After 40 minutes (even though my roommates promised me it would only take 15 minutes), I took my clothes out of the washer and they were soaking wet. Like, I had to wring out the water and my hands are still numb.

I then put in 3 pounds for 30 minutes in the dryer. My clothes are still wet.

Moral of the story? I miss our washing machine at home. There's a little button that says Ambika (thanks Mom) and I just push it and voila - clean clothes.

xx ab.beakshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02957803560688708504noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5632395280076451127.post-15687845275507816752008-03-28T18:43:00.006+00:002008-03-28T18:54:31.562+00:00Two more reasons to <3 Emily Jolynn BrookerSo I was just messing around on Facebook today when I thought, let's see if Jolynn's actually been on the book recently. I was more than pleasantly surprised to see my debut in her profile picture. This is from her 21st birthday:<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjNwzUExk4vCmbY0kPd6UpSfEvRtBi0JXnHUXwRmdWA-Waid4yBrOr9-Q9SijmrGNszhip_Xm9Qz-W_AD9ETdiZ9U4OZhQDCZE7K66th5MRJzNd-EADGxKDyQiX9FbEmjbsP1jK-TAduImK/s400/Picture+3.png" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5182865882173965298" /> Then I checked her about me section which has basically bothered me since freshman year. Everyone in our flat overslept and woke up for our 9am class at half 8. Somehow, we all made it on time. After class I went to work and finished the research for an article I'm doing on 30 Fun Facts and Trivia on Dallas. April 2nd is the show's 30 year anniversary. Afterwards, I met up with my BLC group at the Inns of Court where we took a tour for an hour and a half. It was kind of cool going to the Royal Courts of Justice. I popped into King's College just to see where Papa and Mamu went to school, and then I headed over to the National Portrait Gallery for the Vanity Fair exhibit. It was a display of Vanity Fair covers from 1918 to 2008. I especially liked this one of Jennifer Aniston. <img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhyZ1Q-9mZr5lOLmIamDUlOSozojL44QWJYLAoXvafZM5CHkUIjS_QfI0yU-IvvE5hdjifG-0DlwFwkjTLwJ2piqqyv5RjX54VjqfVFM8GbM6mbVZ5hCCwnDcHYdhrus9x25NvEqtaZ26sI/s400/Picture+1.png" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5182204521634890722" />
All of my favorites ended up being by Liebowitz and Testino. They're absolutely incredible. I'm thinking about getting the Vanity Fair portrait book for my new coffee table with Chelsea.

After that, I came home and then took Shivam to see National Treasure and out for dinner. We had a great time, considering.

Really exhausted, will find the patience to put up my Paris pics soon. Until then...
xx abbeakshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02957803560688708504noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5632395280076451127.post-65117482224331659142008-03-25T18:21:00.006+00:002008-03-25T19:02:45.495+00:00Anger Management<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgRSfWhGrYR5EzKu15feE5Fxfqb6SK12tlooBHrv9duQhMj3Q_HF_H0QIE090YFvjKQ25-tFczhZ1d0QSff2kQohZTF3OpRtftZazPqKPseyh1ooWea5Un8iuTqR2Cq8-DEqWo9lQHD42AR/s400/Picture+6.png" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5181756401927095250" />
I wrote an article on Anger Management today in a state of emergency at MSN. I'm at Sangeeta Bhua's for another night - I can't seem to tear myself away. So, in the mean time, I thought I would catch up on some blogging.
Pictures from Berlin
Berlin was interesting - I had a good time with Laura, Kristin and Sarah, however, I'm done with Germany. Is that bad? I don't know....but I just find Germany to be a very creepy place (for obvious reasons) and after two trips there, I don't really have any major desire to go back...I feel like there are too many other places in the world I still need to visit.
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiU1J-RgqAqGtNWUp0ZPLe9n5D4VZblsoT7SuKyXD8DDHEIdsVzh9Ivi3rYdYi1uXNk3ElOpOXMBf1hKAPBr35QRTENS2SPxJpjqeJ7BfdBBLSTq20MuQMk-V-QCEWvi6_X0kdWZPBHHtsc/s320/IMG_0485-copy.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5181048445287826322" />

We got there on Saturday morning and jumped into things right away. I kind of did my own thing because the other girls were going to be there for longer than me. I did quite a bit in two days and am quite proud of myself for one thing in particular: I never allowed myself to even feel tired which was the first time in my life I feel like I've been able to go a whole day doing so much without letting being tired get in the way. That might not be a good thing...

Things I did:
Brandenburg Gate
Kennedy Museum (so up my alley)
Hotel Adlon (where Michael Jackson dangled his baby over the balcony)
Berlin Wall
Checkpoint Charlie
Reichstag
Holocaust Memorial
Hamburger Banhof Museum (Warhol, Lichtenstein)
U-Bahn

I'm sure there's more but I'd need my notebook to remember and I don't feel like moving.

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg3MZ0B4dtU1PsqM1lXYM-JMSOvR5ASmSYF1B3mMDNrBQz-x3slUIjUfEQnzD1gWoP5pyvk3bVVKdnaeFgYrPIimw9wOH37VDpMY31BbrGAtDKcAO0FlyODA6JNs8p2bQbYMYHzVfGDrRbZ/s320/IMG_0581-copy.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5181049905576706978" />
The Kennedy museum was so cool, I saw the black crocodile Hermes briefcase JFK had with him in Dallas when he was shot. It was basically the story of a dynasty told in pictures. At one point I was standing there and I was just like, everyone in these pictures is dead...kind of creepy.

I didn't do any of the Holocaust museums because I feel like I did them all when I went to Dachau etc.

We stayed in a very decent hostel. I was the first person to our room for six which we thought would have rando girls in it, however when I went up, there was a grown man in the bottom of my bunk. Needless to say, I put my stuff down and ran out. I waited in the lobby for the other girls where we decided we needed to move rooms. Since they were going to stay for longer, Laura Kristin and Sarah got a 3-man and I got a double as a single. Which was the size of my room in London for 4.

Dinner's here. xx.beakshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02957803560688708504noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5632395280076451127.post-46631421701638658782008-03-19T19:32:00.003+00:002008-03-19T19:36:54.960+00:00Your help just hurtsCurrent mood: dismal, overwhelmed

To Do List: Pack for Paris, Dinner with Sunaina and Jinesh, find a way to think about something else than the confusion of bear city, decide what non-obvious things I want to do in Paris, get in a better mood, get some sleep.

Time left do to all of this: approx. 3hrs, not including the sleeping bit.

Time car is coming to get us for Paris: 4.30 a.m.

Enough said.beakshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02957803560688708504noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5632395280076451127.post-35274078021717551712008-03-18T10:08:00.003+00:002008-03-18T10:11:34.872+00:00And if I make it through today, will tomorrow be the same?In honour of Paris Hilton and Benji Madden's newfound love, I've chosen a Good Charlotte lyric for today's title.

Obviously I haven't written in ages, sorry to those of you who need my blog posts to get through your day. Right. I arrived in London over 2 months ago right? Right. Yet, I only have one Facebook album up portraying my fabulous time abroad. Why, you ask? Because there is NO EFFICIENT WAY WHATSOEVER to upload photos. I can't show people annnnything. Nothing. Nada. I have no evidence of being abroad whatsoever. I can't even show you the buddy bears I found in Berlin.

Why am I so angry? Oh, well, because it's only taken 4 days for me to find out that no, it is not possible to upload any album to Facebook. After a 2 hour waiting period tonight, only 1 Berlin photo made it online, so when I went to delete this album (because let's face it, people expect more from me) I saw that there were 5 other albums with question marks - signifying they were lost, confused, and empty - a sad symbol of my useless efforts at showing everyone what I'm doing.

To add to the mix? I bought iLife 08 at Mizzou when I was there just for iPhoto 08. The grrreat news is that Facebook is not compatible with iPhoto 08. WHAT DOES THAT EVEN MEAN?

At least I have something to show for my day.

I'm going to go scream out of frustration and try and fall asleep,
ab.beakshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02957803560688708504noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5632395280076451127.post-32815695682215827282008-03-10T21:15:00.003+00:002008-03-10T21:21:31.819+00:00Maybe TomorrowLet me run you through my day. It was weird.

Then I hit my head on a taxi door.

Good night and good luck.
ABbeakshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02957803560688708504noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5632395280076451127.post-31118133768331716572008-03-06T22:03:00.002+00:002008-03-06T22:15:14.796+00:00SickyHaven't been feeling well all day - K and I have been holed up in our room for most of the day. Work was fine, Thursdays are MSN Money, but I left a bit early so I'll have to finish an article tomorrow.

Dad and I went to Scott's -- one of my favourite (London spelling!) restaurants in London. This is the same place I went to last summer when that man spilled a bottle of wine on my Kooba bag. Yes, its so good I went back for more.

Tomorrow we're either going to San Lorenzo or Crazy Bear, can't decide yet.

I'm wishing I wasn't going to Edinburgh this weekend because I would desperately love to sleep in. Great planning on my part.

Ahh great news! Chelsea found some amazing apartments!

xx Ambika.beakshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02957803560688708504noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5632395280076451127.post-37590019384278608632008-03-05T22:21:00.002+00:002008-03-05T22:29:08.653+00:00Daddy Daughter FestHey okay, so I'm trying this getting to bed early thing,(I don't think it's going to help because we all know my issue is the morning bit) which is unfortunate for you because this blog post is going to be short.

Dad's in town, if you couldn't tell, and we're having fun with what little time we have. Basically just dinners, but great company + great food = a night to remember.

I'll do a Berlin post as soon as I can figure out where I put my camera cord, and why iLife '08 is SO INCREDIBLY ANNOYING.

Kristin and Sarah come back tonight :)

I wrote an article on Monday that I'm really proud of -- sorry to those of you who I've already harassed into telling me it's good tee hee.

Oh, and grrreat news -- at the moment I'm only enrolled for 2 classes.

xx Ambikabeakshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02957803560688708504noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5632395280076451127.post-37400422490126060992008-02-29T21:58:00.005+00:002008-02-29T22:45:09.825+00:00Blasts From the PastThe last few days have been very unexpected...it's funny how when one thing happens, everything seems to follow suit. In every sense of the meaning. I've had some pretty powerful re-connections in the last few days, I'm still starry-eyed.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj5r7XCsc-jIkBpECIfy6CCTSlVhL5gRrozxX2Y7_iF-bvPGaGkMtOvqGMInafr1Psgfmwh6tbOEFQ4HjoZ5bVMnFwg4m-Jc1e42nQ7D8p-TzdTxn6xud6q9dcySMUke7vvUXE9BR-FCr4i/s320/IMG_0451.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5172536747318469106" />

I haven't seen my grandmother (read, Papa's mom) since my grandfather's funeral in Nairobi nearly 5 years ago. She was in town this last week, unfortunately for another funeral, but I got to spend some time with her which was just unbelievable. At first it was a little awkward, just because so much has changed since I last saw her, but on the second day it was perfect. I went to Hounslow on Wednesday afternoon and had lunch at her sister's house. They have a cook from India living with them and it was soo incredible to have home-cooked food! (I can't wait till Sangeeta Bhua gets back!!) I decided that no matter how uncomfortable it might have been, I was going to spend the night there on Thursday. I mean, it's the least I could do, and I hope it meant a lot to her. It certainly did for me. She lit up when I asked her to make me sugar prontas (can't spell in Hindi) and I was just watching her, thinking, what a grandmotherly thing. So anyway, I slept there last night and then this morning, the cook walked me to the tube station and I went straight to work. Hounslow's really far, for the record. Like, we're talking zone 6.

I've also been wanting to get in touch with Lindsay basically since we graduated, and I finally got the courage to do so. I pinged her a message and gave her my email address, to which she sent me such a nice letter. After this much time, it's hard to remember why we fell out -- I can only remember good things. Well mostly :/

On Wednesday I met up with Jamie Corley and Jono Cohen, also from high school. We went to the LSE student pub and it was a lot of fun. I just wish someone would have taken my phone away from me!

I'm going to Berlin tomorrow which I'm really excited about. I was having second thoughts yesterday because I kind of would love a weekend alone here, but I think that was just part of buyer's remorse or something.

Work was okay today -- was kind of struggling but oh well. Had two articles this week which I'm really proud of. I'm working on another two for next week. I'll be the only intern in next week as it's the mid-term break for the rest of the program. (I went home, remember?) We had Nando's Chicken Friday which was everything I could have hoped for. I also went out with everyone for drinks at a pub near the Westminster Cathedral because the Tech & Gadgets Editor had his last day today. I'm glad I went, I got to talk to a bunch of different people. I'm also going to test drive cars with the Cars Editor...no big deal. Like, amazing ones.

I'm semi-jealous everyone's in STL for Nidhi's baby shower this weekend, but Dad will be here on Monday and I cannot wait for that!!

Also, could people start voting on my poll? Grrreat, thanks.

Ambika xxbeakshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02957803560688708504noreply@blogger.com3
